Szinopszis:
A Plutarco Elías Calles vezette kormány intézkedései nyomán az 1920-as évektől a mexikói egyház üldözést szenvedett. A törvények nyíltan vallás, illetve katolikusellenesek voltak.1926-1929 között a magukat Cristeros-nak hívó csoport tagjai fellázadtak a mexikói kormány antiklerikális alkotmánya ellen. A békés ellenállás időszaka után elképesztő erőszakhullám vette kezdetét, sok civil is áldozatul esett a vérengzésnek. A háború mintegy 90.000 emberéletet követelt: 60.000-et a szövetségi és 30.000-et a lázadók oldalán. A háború hatására a mexikói lakosság kb. 5 százaléka vándorolt ki az Egyesült Államokba.
